Friday Briefing: Improving Macro Security though automated digital signatures

Macros and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) – the language macros are written in – were created in the days before ‘secure by design’. They are great for automating repetitive tasks in Office – from formatting to data ingestion – but they can also launch other Win32 applications, invoke PowerShell commands.

The simple solution to the risk posed by macros is to simply block them, but for businesses than run on macros this is not very practical and may only encourage users to send macro-enabled files to their personal PC, to circumvent organisational controls.

In this Friday Briefing, Sam Brazier-Hollins, Head of Cyber for oobe, will demonstrate Macrosine, a more nuanced solution that allows you to blend user productivity with Essential Eight Level 3 security compliance.

Key features include:

  • Risk Assessment: Macrosine performs risk assessments on files, categorising them into different risk levels, and allows the customer to define their risk tolerance.
  • Granular Control: The product offers granular control over who can use which risk categories of files, allowing organisations to tailor security policies to their specific needs.
  • Automation: Macrosine offers automation capabilities, allowing for the automatic generation of tickets or notifications based on detected risks.
  • Data Stays within the Customer's Environment: One of the key features of Macrosine is that customer data remains within their environment, ensuring data security and compliance.
  • Co-Creation with Federal Government: Macrosine, was developed in collaboration with the federal government, making it uniquely suited to address high-level security needs.
